Morton Feldman is regarded by many as among America's greatest composers. His music is idiosyncratic, but his mode of presentation was also unusual, encompassing a variety of formats, including a pioneering notation on graph paper that facilitated deliberately imprecise specifications of several parameters, including pitch. These graph works have special importance in the history of post-war music, not only as a major contribution to notational practices, but also because they acted as catalysts, the effects of which would reverberate in the United States and Europe throughout the 1950s and 1960s. David Cline's book provides an analysis of Feldman's graph music, its links with contemporaneous currents in painting and its immediate impact on classical music. Additionally, it examines the links between Feldman's graphs and the music of Earle Brown, John Cage and Christian Wolff, as well as providing commentary on the performances of David Tudor.
